A student’s checklist
It is really important that you have with you these documents, especially when you first arrive in New Zealand. They may be required when dealing with the enrolment office and financial institutions.
Passport
Documents supporting visa application
University acceptance letter
Accommodation acceptance letter
Financial affidavit
Identity card (this is rather optional. It is not necessary that you have your Malaysian identity card with you. However, it is preferable that you have an alternative, eg isic card before you obtain your student id)
Passport-size photo
Latest medical or health report
Driving license (if you wish to drive in NZ)
Prescription for essential medication
*you may also want to bring with you a copy of your foundation programme final results, just in case. As for those who will still be under 18 when you reach New Zealand, you might want to bring an approval/authorization letter signed by your guardian.
As for clothing, it is up to you what you bring. However this piece of information on the weather in New Zealand might help:
The north of New Zealand is subtropical and the south temperate. The warmest months are December, January and February, and the coldest June, July and August. In summer, the average maximum temperature ranges between 20-30ºC and in winter between 10-15ºC. While these temperatures are the norm, the weather in New Zealand can change unexpectedly as cold fronts or tropical cyclones quickly blow in. Because of this, you should be prepared for sudden changes in weather and temperature, particularly if you’re going hiking or doing other outdoor activities.

Note: The weather varies from one city to another. Snow falls in most parts of the South Island. Wellington is known to be very windy. The temperature can drop tremendously when it rains and when the strong wind blows. Hence, do find out more about the weather of the place you will be living in.
